21st Century Literature provides you with the opportunity to develop a critical understanding of current developments in literature by sampling a diverse variety of postmillennial texts.

Literature

is a group of works that are made up of words. From the latin term littera which means letter. (Ramos, et.al,2010,p.2) stated that the world literature means acquaintance with letters.

Literature are written works, writings , texts and compositions that are published on a particular subject that have superior or long lasting merit.

Why do we study literature

> Because of its values

>we learn more about one’s culture, tradition and lifestyle

>we can know more about the past

There are Two Forms of Literature

Prose – it is written in paragraph form.

Poetry – it is treated subjectively using the overflowing emotions.

There are seven (7) approaches to the study of literature and literary critism

Cultural Approach – focuses on someone’s culture

Formalistic Approach – focuses on the structure or forms of the reading selection

History/ Historical Approach – focuses on the events having historical significance

Impressionistic Approach – focuses on opinions or impressions

Moral and Humanistic Approach – focuses on morality or character

Psychological Approach – it investigates the mental framework

Sociological Approach – it is the characters that connect to the people
